Hiring a Professional Newborn Photographer

Newborn training with Stacey Ash

Ever since digital photography started, phographers are a dime a dozen. You will see a long list of referrals if you just ask on social media. Then, there is the amazing technology with mobile phones. My iPhone has a better camera than any of the film cameras I used as a kid. So, why hire a photographer? I bet you are considering hiring a professional newborn photographer because you know how valuable this phase of life is. You can’t get this time back and you want to make sure you capture every detail. I hope you will see that hiring a professional newborn photographer versus an amateur or trying to DIY it, is the right decision. Here are some things to research and ask when narrowing down your search.

What to consider when hiring a Professional Newborn Photographer

1. Insured Professional Newborn Photographer

We are talking about your brand new, precious baby. Going cheap or simple is not worth the risk. Any photographer who understands the vulnerability of babies will carry insurance. This is something you definitely should ask. Does the photographer value you enough to carry insurance? I take my job very seriously, as should all professional newborn photographers. All of my professional colleague friends do everything we can to protect our clients and our businesses. That is not necessarily true for beginners or hobbyist photogarphers.

2 – Safety

Safety is my top priority as a professional newborn photographer. Those baby photos you find on Pinterest are not poses you should try on your own. They are not only challenging, but there a safety factors to consider, as well.

Professional newborn photographers have listened to medical experts to ensure the safety of your baby. We know how to support the baby to keep them stable. We have weights in the bottom of buckets to keep baby from tipping and pillows to support the baby’s joints. It is also important to carefully monitor the baby’s skin color and breathing patterns. I employ a trained assistant for extra safety. This allows me to have extra hands on the baby so I can focus on capturing the image in camera. My assistant knows her number one job is to never take her eyes off of the baby!

3 – Training to become a Professional Newborn Photographer

Does the photographer have experience with posing babies? It takes more than just being good at using a camera. Professional newborn photographers spend thousands of dollars getting trained. Hands-on training with a mentor is invaluable. During training, a photographer learns how to watch for the baby’s safety and how to properly use props.

4 – Equipment

It’s not the camera that makes a photographer good, but rather that they know how to operate it. But, to get quality images that you can enlarge for wall art, it is important that the photographer use modern equipment with up-to-date technology.

During your search, make sure you ask about lighting. It is the biggest factor affecting quality. Natural light is beautiful, but can also create grain in your images if it is a dreary day. Look at the photographers’ portfolio for consistency in lighting and color.

5 – Prop and Wardrobe Selection

What does a professional newborn photographer provide?

Does the photographer provide outfits and props so you don’t have to add that task to your list of stressors? A professional newborn photographer should want your newborn session to be 100% worry-free.

Will your baby’s photos be unique to your family and in the style that you prefer? Ask the photographer about their outfits and props. Some photographers have a simple style, while others provide a large variety of styles and colors. Make sure you choose a photographer who aligns with your wishes.
